VODAREK'S GRADE 8'S
MATH CONTENT
We are learning about Pythagoras and his theorem. We will be exploring other geometric relationships too. It will be important to recall square numbers, square roots and how to balance equations.
We HAD a BIG CUMULATIVE TEST on all content covered this year so far. The intent was to learn how to prepare for larger exams and which study strategies are most effective. The results were very polar - some students did exceptionally well, while others did not. Let this be a learning opportunity. I have posted the BIG TEST and the ANSWERS here.
We keep a math journal - entries range from conceptual (notes about concepts and mathematical procedures) to affective (how we feel about our understanding). This should be used as a reference when studying concepts and building deeper understanding.
We do weekly mental math quizzes - these are 15 questions from all strands in the math curriculum.
Some students/parents have requested additional practice problems for home. A package is available to all students to take home and do as homework. These are not mandatory and are not assessed. Students have access to the correct answers and can check the accuracy of their solutions.
MATH ONLINE SUPPORT
Homework Help, the online math support for all Ontario grade 7 to 10 students, is hosting an Open House from February 13th - 24th by offering online math tutors during the day between 8:30 am - 3:00 pm. They will continue to have online tutors available during the evenings from 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm each evening from Sunday to Thursday. To register your students and to learn more about this offer, please click this link - https://homeworkhelp.ilc.org/open-house/. Students will need their OEN numbers in order to register.

MATH CONNECTIONS
When learning about Prime Numbers we learned a bit about codes, cyphers and encryption. Here is an interesting article from Wired Magazine, titled 'Kill the Password: A String of Characters Won't Protect You'
Really big numbers and our universe - here is a link to a cool graphic/video showing just how small we are, and how big our universe is.
